After Norse colonisation, Shetlanders spoke their own language called Norn. The language has gradually changed over time but many words remain. This is particularly true of bird, plant, and place names. In my designs I like to support Shetland language and culture by using Shetland words keeping them alive and in the forefront of people’s minds. Buggiflooer is the Shetland word for sea campion which, growing in abundance around the Shetland coast, is the inspiration behind this design. The Buggiflooer Beanie was the official Shetland Wool Week hat in 2023, the year I was Patron.
